About Esophageal Varices Bleeding (EVB)Damage caused by cirrhosis of the liver obstructs venous (portal) blood flow. This creates portal hypertension, which, in turn, forms dilated veins (varices) along the esophagus. Failure to relieve such hypertension causes these esophageal varices (EV) to bleed, with high rates of mortality. Treatment with Endoscopic Injection SclerotherapyIntravenous pharmacotherapy is the prevailing treatment for treating acute bleeding, and preventing rebleeding, of esophageal varices. Though easy to administer, intravenous treatment lacks the precision of endoscopic procedures. On the other hand, Endoscopic Band Ligation (EBL) offers precise control at the site of the EV bleeding, but is relatively difficult to execute. Endoscopic Injection Sclerotherapy (EIS) combines the convenience of pharmacotherapy, with the precision of endoscopy. Clinical studies demonstrate that repeated EIS eradicates esophageal varices bleeding in most long-term patients. EIS can also be administered in conjunction with EBL for more intensive therapy. Ethamolin® is the only sclerosing agent available for controlling bleeding in esophageal varices of any size |
